Regional Icons: North American Fish and Seafood Logos

Regional icons are an important part of our culture in North America. Included in art, these reminders represent nature, industries and other components of our daily lives. The logos below are just a small sample of the many icons that are commonly seen in North America.

The Atlantic blue crab is an icon of the Chesapeake Bay and its surrounding states. This delicious crab is harvested by local watermen and shipped around the world.

A North Carolina icon centers around its maritime legends. The state is said to have been a stronghold for pirates, which has made the “jolly roger” pirate logo an icon of the region.

In New England, American lobsters are an important harvest from the sea. States such as Maine, Massachusetts, and Connecticut are proud of their seafood industries and often pay tribute to the American lobster in works of art.
Like New England, the Pacific Northwest also has a rich tradition of commercial fishing. For states like Oregon, the Dungeness crab is an icon which represents its rich local seafood cuisine.
Nova Scotia, a small Province of Canada, is known for its simple life. The local economy is based upon fishing and other industrial production. The Atlantic cod, shown in the following logo, is an important icon of Nova Scotian culture.
